Tools in the Classroom

While in the 7th grade, students learn how to participate in a Socratic Seminar. The purpose of the seminar is to help develop critical thinking and inquiry skills, public speaking and listening skills. During the seminar the students will be able to evaluate ideas, issues, and values in a particular context and written work.

The seminar is about a piece of work they have been studying. Before the it takes place, students are in charge of writing their own High Order Thinking Questions (HOTS). These questions are asked in a way to begin conversation; they cannot be answered with a simple “yes” or “no”.
